curiosity killed the cat, but it won't kill me
Many things perplexed Vincent, but pictures were one of them. The spirit who took him in had tried to explain that things weren't always what they appeared to be, along with the differences between objective and subjective thought, but Vincent had a hard time grasping the concept of subjective thoughts. When he was shown a picture of a sunflower, he stated very plainly that a flower was all that it was. A big, yellow flower. Of course, Gran had rambled on about how the sunflower could represent many things and he'd eventually gotten distracted by a stray strand of thread that had came from somewhere on his cotton shirt. By the time the old woman had finished her speech, the blonde had pulled the string for so long that he'd managed to be rid of the bottom seam. Granny was none too pleased, but she was a very forgiving person.
The memory was strong in the spirit's mind when he reached down to trace the shape drawn in the sand. Someone must have come around earlier and drawn it there with their finger, or perhaps a stick. Vincent had noticed people drawing in the sand many times before, though he was very unsure of what they were actually drawing. Sometimes they took quite a while and drew a variety of different shapes. A couple would draw the shape that he had known to be a heart (because that's what Gran had said represented love, and that was something Vin would actually pay attention to) with a series of smaller, angular shapes on the inside. He had noticed that some of the shapes were similar, but they changed slightly when someone else drew them. He'd not managed to convince Gran to come to the beach, so he figured he could convince someone else to help him understand what they were.
What Vincent did not know was that the shapes were letters, and letters made up words. He spoke words just fine, but he didn't know that many, and he wasn't sure which letter made which sound. He knew all about pictures and cameras and colors and shapes, but letters were never something that were brought up. As such, he was filled with an enormous amount of curiosity. That curiosity had led him here, to the beach, tracing the mysterious shapes with his finger. It was quite the warm day, so he'd been wearing little more than a cotton tee and something that Gran called 'swimming trunks' (seemed little more than shorts to him), which he was wearing because they had flames on them. Being a fire spirit, he had a hard time resisting such things. He was lacking his usual top hat in favor of his naturally messy blonde mop, which was behaving surprisingly well for how much he did with it.
"What are these things?" Vincent mumbled to himself, perhaps a little too loudly, crouched over the letter 'A', which was the first letter of the name 'Anna'. It appeared again a little ways away, after two other curious shapes that looked almost identical. If he looked down a little farther he saw more, different shapes, which spelled out the name Bryce. The heart read 'Anna + Bryce', who had recently left the beach a few hours ago. It was now dusk and was getting a little chilly, but Vincent hadn't the slightest care in the world. Let the others take their nighttime walks, he needed to figure this out before the water washed them away!
